Many of you are familiar with the 2005 geoblock hardening Lake Miam/Summit Lake trail, one of the longest and most scenic ATV trails on the island.
The project was funded from a grant from USFWS, passed through KIB to the Kodiak Soil & Water Conservation District who did the grunt work. This summer marks phase II of the project and Island Trails Network has taken the lead on coordinating the trail work.
Stakeholders/Partners:
Sam Christian: Past project lead, SWCD (retired)
Island Trails Network (ITN): Erin Whipple, Andy Schroeder, Paul Shaw
Kodiak Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD): Donna Jones, Paul Shaw, Blythe Brown
Kodiak Island Borough (KIB): Duane Dvorak, Bud Cassidy
US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS): Gary Goldberg (funds administrator), John DeLapp (contract administrator)
State of Alaska: Landowner, Lake Miam site
Lesnoi Native Corp: Landowner, portion of trail leading to site (17B easement).
Project Description: 800 linear feet, dual track 1” Geoblock, no underlayment, some anchoring in steep terrain. Bridges: 6 Wooden Bridges to be purchased locally, prefabricated off-site, assembled on-site. Some brushing, cutting etc. Trail conditions unknown at this time, a scouting trip is being planned.
Timeline: ITN is researching combining geoblock shipment with Portage trail shipment. May/June delivery of materials likely. June/July 2007 for installation.
Funding: Executing the 2nd year of a 2-year grant from FWS. Grant funds pass through KIB to SWCD. SWCD proposes to purchase all materials & transfer to ITN for installation.
Training: Sam Christian offers to spend a day instructing volunteer groups on geoblock installation.
Labor Requirements: 300+ man-hours. Depends on weather, soil conditions etc. Past estimates indicate a volunteer crew of 4-8 could complete in 1 week, possibly less with larger workforce. Sam estimates ½ day per bridge and 300-400 ft of geoblock per day by a crew this size.
Equipment Requirements: Aircraft (materials airlift), ATVs (personnel transport), Camp supplies, Generator (SWCD loan), Screw Guns (SWCD loans 2), Chainsaw (SWCD loan), food/water.
ITN will provide training on laying geo-block prior to the event. We are looking for dedicated trail enthusiasts to help us lay the geo-block and build the 6 bridges on-site. This project will likely require ove 300 man-hours, but as those who have ridden the trail know, it's well-worth it!
