Trail Name: Buskin Beach
Date Traveled: June 2, 2007 (National Trails Day)
Type of Trail : Standard Terra Trail (beach)
Directions to Trail: Follow W. Rezanof from the direction of downtown Kodiak toward the airport. Take a left before the airport, following signs to the Buskin River and the National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters. Follow road to its end, park at the beach near the Buskin River mouth.
Trail Classification: 2=Simple/Minor Developed. Beach access is tide dependent. (Classification of 2 means tread is continuous but narrow and rough. Few/no allowances for passing. Native materials. Occassional obstacles. Blockages cleared to define route. Vegetation may encroach into trailway.)
Trail Use Description: At lower tides one can go from teh trailhead (at the parking lot) to the salmon stream markers-- maybe about 1 mile. The beach can be wide, falt and white at time! For the fearless, you can hop on top of rocks and continue all the way to Gibson Cove! In between you find 2 crescent-shaped white sand beaches and an aold military dumping ground that is now melded into metal.
Use: This trail user recommends hiker/pedestrian use, kayak use, or raft use.

At minus tides, this beach is a great place to wear out your dog, or play ultimate frisbee on a sand-covered pitch 5 times the size of a football field!
At the north end of the beach, just before the ADF&G marker, you can cut inland and easily pick up a trail that will take you to boyscout lake.

This is also a great place for kids to hike and explore for "treasure". There's lots of little pieces of driftwood and huge clam shells that kids love to collect.
Just watch the river's edge as it is sometimes a sharp drop-off.
