Here is an updated and enhanced version of the trail description:
Trail Name: Russian Ridge Forest Trails
Date Traveled: June 2, 2007
Names of Trail Travelers: Hans (leader), Juenger family (Cassandra, Gary, Charles)
Type of Trail (Standard Terra, Water, Snow): Land Class 1
The trails in this beautiful old forest next to town are mostly small game trails since very few people venture into the area (difficult to access because of surrounding areas of dense brush on steep slopes behind Selief Lane). The trails and access routes are difficult to describe. I have drawn some simple maps for my own orientation which could be improved and published.
Today was the first nice day after a week of rain and drizzle - great for a hike. In years past we made great efforts at cleaning up several messy party places with lots of trash (beer- soda cans, glas and plastics, torn tarps, ropes and nets). Surprisingly, many of the cleaned places have remained clean over several years. Today we came upon an extremely messy party place above Dark Lake expanding into an old abandoned primitive homestead (cast iron stove, wash basin, many pots and tools, corrugated sheets of metal etc., see pictures). This would need a major clean up effort (steep terrain in dense brush, no near by road or improved trail).
I hope that this area becomes more popular with responsible hikers and naturalists since it has great potential as park land close to town and could provide a shortcut access for pedestrians and bikes from town to the Monashka Bay area (a trail could end up at Marmot Drive or beyond the trash dump on Monashka Bay Road).
It was disappointing that so few people came on this hike. If anybody is interested in knowing more about it or in going on a hike please, contact me
