All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and other Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) certainly have their appropriate place, and many people own and responsibly operate these machines. Increasingly, however, irresponsible OHV riders drive their machines in inappropriate places, and sometimes cause negative impacts on hunting and fishing.
As part of its national work on OHVs, the Izaak Walton League is seeking personal stories and anecdotes from hunters and anglers about how their hunting and fishing experiences were negatively impacted by ATVs or other OHVs. Did a loud OHV scare off that big buck during hunting season? Has your favorite trout stream suffered erosion or other damage from these machines driving across or through the channel? Are you finding fewer game animals in areas that have seen increased OHV traffic? We’d love to hear your stories.
We are especially interested in hearing of stories from the eight states of Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, but stories from other states are welcome, too. We hope to compile a compendium of stories (with photos of the hunters or anglers who tell them) later this year. Your stories need not be long or professionally written, but we do want to hear from you. The League hopes to use these stories to not only document some of the negative impacts of OHVs on hunting and fishing, but for educational purposes with OHV riders and policy-makers and for possible strengthening of OHV regulations in the future.
The Izaak Walton League of America is a national nonprofit conservation organization of hunters, anglers, and others who enjoy the outdoors. Please submit your stories and anecdotes to Kevin Proescholdt, the director of the League’s Wilderness and Public Lands Program, at kevinp@iwla.org, 651-649-1446, ext. 26. Thanks for your help!
